Spatial renovation of BNU Atlantic Bank's Macau headquarters:
Ambitions and Practices of the Financial Industry in Rethinking Service Models
BNU Atlantic, which originated in Portugal, has inspired the renovation of its Macau headquarters with the spirit of Portugal - the famous sailing ship, a symbol of adventure and multiculturalism.
In 1997, the headquarters was enlarged with a modern high-rise building with a façade that echoes the existing two-storey colonial building of 1926, as if it were a sail mast built on top.
In the digital age, the interior of the headquarters has been refurbished to preserve its symbolic heritage, with the traditional wooden hull of a sailing ship now unifying the design of the hall with a white space silhouette.
The world is changing, and so are banks. The financial industry is beginning to reinvent its position. They are looking for experiences that combine the self-service of technological solutions with human expertise and support. The spatial layout of the new branch reflects Atlantic Bank's ambition and commitment to rethink its service model to match customer expectations and preferences.
One of the main goals of this renovation was to bring in natural sunlight through the existing large façade windows, skylights and double folding glass doors, and to enhance the visual dialog between private and public spaces. The digital age means accessibility and transparency, and conveying this notion of openness, one can feel the energy of the bank working with and for the people.
The new GRG contours and lighting fixtures are textured with curved lines to create a sense of spatial dynamics, and the offices behind the service counters are connected to the frontline customers in an eye-catching design that even feels like it's communicating with the people on the street.
